Classes
We offer classes for every level, and each class is structured so everyone can get the individual attention they need.
The structure of every lesson is based on the three pillars that form the foundation of HKD.
The pillars being Movement, Martial Arts & the Mind. In order to fully understand the HKD system in its completeness, each element needs to be fully realised.
Movement
As human beings, movement is probably our most primal instinct. When we reflect on the evolutionary nature of our bodies: for most of history Humans simply had to move more. Our modern day deprivation of regular natural movement patterns affects us negatively. Inevitably leading to the widespread health problems we’re seeing around the world.
At HKD the practice of movement through categorised skills such as locomotive (ground movements, crawling, jumping and running), calisthenics (the combination of strength training and gymnastic movements) and yoga (a practice that combines the mind and body, through posture and breathing exercises), will help improve conditioning, strength, control over the body & its emotions, aswell as the overall state of you health no matter what our age or physical state.
Martial Arts
The foundations of the HKD fighting system lay within the Chinese arts but without any limitation or commitment to a specific style. In many ways it is the true essence of the modern term ‘Mixed Martial Art’.
HKD is designed to be a system of fighting for the individual. One that compliments an individuals strengths. No two people move the same way and therefore neither will they fight so.
Through efficient and explosive techniques that encompass punching, open hand strikes, elbows, kicking, throwing, wrestling and grappling. HKD is an effective and economical martial art for the modern day.
The studying of HKD, truly is a journey and a life long one should you choose it to be. There is no mastery and it is stressed to students that consistent, hard and quality work is required in order to achieve a successful understanding of its concepts. Always remain in a state of learning and never consider yourself complete. Only then will you find ‘Complexity through simplicity’.
Mind
The ability to control our mind, can allow us to perform better, manage stress and improve our overall health.
Whilst HKD does not follow any specific practice of yoga or meditation, the principles remain the same - to develop movement with stillness or in more common term ‘conciousness’.
The practice of breath work and consciousness are designed to improve our performances in both martial arts and daily life but more importantly teach us to not fear connection. Something that is often lost within the anxieties of modern living.
